When he began planning the series, the Second Empire had not yet fallen; he assumed it would take another 5-10 years. His plan was to let Nana's life rise and fall over a decade. Instead, the Empire crumbled before he had even published the first volume! This combining of the classes serves to give even more force to Nana’s power and eventual control, ascribing to her a role not held by any other of Zola’s female characters. In fact, the majority of the women in this novel assume a dominating role, generally attributed (by Zola elsewhere and thus, by extension, by his society) to males, whereas the men become the more submissive and 1981-03-15 Nana opens in 1867, the year of the World Fair, when Paris, thronged by a cosmopolitan elite, was a perfect target for Zola's scathing denunciation of hypocrisy and fin-de-si cle moral corruption. In this new translation, the fate of Nana--the Helen of Troy of the second Empire, and daughter of the laundress in L'Assommoir--is now rendered in racy, stylish English.

Nana is one of a sequence of 20 novels that constitute Zola’s Rougon-Macquart cycle. The title character grows up in the slums of Paris. She has a brief career as an untalented actress before finding success as a courtesan. Although vulgar and Nana tells the story of Nana Coupeau's rise from streetwalker to high-class prostitute during the last three years of the French Second Empire. Nana first appeared near the end of Zola's earlier novel Rougon-Macquart series, L'Assommoir (1877), where she is the daughter of an abusive drunk.
Zola’s Nana demonstrates how the female body can exist only as an object, as women’s success within their feminized occupations is produced by their bodies.
